'The Fruit of Stone' was great. 'An Unfinished Life' even better. I was looking forward to coffee with Einar and Mitch again out on their ranch but alas that will not happen. I will avoid spoilers here, but this is not the heartwarming book of love and care that 'An Unfinished Life' had started. While that book did show how people can care for one another, such as Mitch needing to be tended, this book does the same but in a very different way. Now Einar is the one who has replaced Mitch in needing attention for his old age.
Everyone in the book is falling apart in their own way. Some addicts, others with failed relationships and so on. This is not an uplifting tale.
The writing alone is not the same. This book lacks the smooth prose you enjoyed so much about Spragg's other novels. Not impossible to get through, but not very memorable. I will reread Spragg's other novels, but never this one. Not sure if I will even hold on to it for that reason, it will not be recommended or read again.
I still have faith in Spragg though, he can write a great story. I just wish we left Einar where we saw him last in 'An Unfinished Life.'

But that's life I guess. People grow old, and times get bad. But we don't need to pay to read about em.

mark spragg is a great writer ! so glad to have found him !!!
I am an unabashed devotee of Mark Spragg's books. This newest one did not disappoint other than it ended too soon! I love how he continues his characters as they grow and change. I always know that I have a treat coming when I pick up his latest offering. My only complaint is that he doesn't write enough books!
As I started reading this book, I found it very hard to follow. It seemed as though each chapter was a new book, but with little background information given on the characters. Maybe this would be the book to read had I already read "An Unfinished Life" since that book seems to be the starting to this story. I was never fully able to engage into this story or its complex characters, it felt like I never got the background information on any of the many, many characters that filled this book. If you have read Spragg's other novel first, then this may be a great read for you.
While I really enjoyed "An Unfinished Life", "Bone Fire" not as much. The writing was excellent but the story line much darker and sadder that the first novel. It seems some of the hurts that were resolved in the first novel return and continue to fester in the second. My thoughts were that the author was in a darker place in his life when he wrote "Bone Fire".
Life doesnot always turn out the way we hope, and sometimes neither do novels.
The book was well written and engaging. Mark Spragg paints pictures with his words and captures the modern American West well. However, I thought an Unfinished Life was a better story line than this one. The same characters come back to us 10 years later in this book. The book jumps from character to character frequently and it is hard to remember which character is which. But overall the book was good and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading books about the Modern West.
Somehow I missed this book, life I guess! Any way when I came across it it was like I found 20 bucks in an old pair of jeans. As expected, it was pleasure to read. Real characters, a beautiful"turn of a phrase", and, one of my favorite mark spragg traits, a description of work or a task that is authentic.
I thought this would be more biographical but it was just a narrative. A good one, but a narrative.
